5 Tips to Flawless Skin

In the overwhelming world of skincare it can be hard to know what are the true essential routines needed to have flawless skin. There is a lot of sneaky marketing going on so it is important to be in the know of what will actually help you and of what is a load of bullsh*t. Now of course there are more than 5 essential things to do for flawless skin, but below are some of the most important players in the game.

Here are the 5 different tips and tricks to help you reach flawless skin:

1. Always use a moisturizer on top of your serum, especially if you live out in Colorado or drier climates — using a moisturizer on top of your serum ensures that you are locking in the magic and medicinal properties of said serum. Without this step you are basically not going to absorb as many nutrients, leaving your skin dryer and more likely to have a compromised skin barrier. The moisturizer you choose is going to be dependent on your skin type. If you have more oily skin or are more prone to acne look for something more lightweight and absolutely no shea butter or coconut oil! If you have dryer more dehydrated skin you can use some of those thicker moisturizers but ensure it is safe for the face - remember, just because it is a long list of ingredients/actions does not necessarily mean it is the best product, quality over quantity people! If you’re needing support around this simply book a consultation or facial and I will give you recommendations based on what your skin needs.

2. Exfoliate monthly with a facial treatment to keep skin fresh, bright and help soften fine lines — exfoliation is a key step in maintaining healthy, glowing skin and a rockin’ skin barrier. It is important to not overly exfoliate, especially the younger you are, as this is what compromises the skin barrier, leads to sensitized skin, redness, etc. Exfoliating once a month with a skincare professional is the optimal way to get a quality treatment in. This exfoliation mask will leave your skin softer, brighter and with softened lines and wrinkles. It is important to build your skins tolerance up to those stronger masks in order to not shock the skin which can cause unwanted hyperpigmentation.

3. Always always always wear broad spectrum sunscreen — this will protect your skin against both UVA and UVB rays, which will prevent sunburn, accelerated aging skin, hyperpigmentation, cancer, etc.. UVA rays are known as the “aging ray” or long waves. 95% of UVA rays penetrate both clouds and glass fully. This is the dominate tanning ray (what is used for tanning beds). UVB rays are known as the burning ray or short wave. The intensity of these waves vary throughout the day and seasons. These shorter waves cause reddening and burns on the superficial layer of the skin. These rays do not penetrate glass. Only a broad spectrum sunscreen is going to protect you against both UVA and UVB rays.

4. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day as well as eat a protein rich diet accompanied by good fats — One major aspect of skincare that often gets overlooked is how what you consume affects your skin. When you're well-hydrated, your skin tends to look more plump and supple. Water helps maintain the skin’s elasticity, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and make your face look fresher. Drinking enough water supports a healthy glow by helping skin cells function properly and aiding circulation. On the other hand, dehydration can make your skin look dull, tired, and uneven. When you are not drinking enough water it can cause your body to retain fluids, especially around the eyes and face, leading to puffiness. Dehydration can compromise the skin barrier, making your skin more prone to irritation, inflammation, and breakouts. It is important to consume proper amounts of protein and fat in order to support your body in the production of collagen. Internal collagen is going to be much more beneficial to your skin than topical (aka those companies selling you probiotics and collagen products in your creams is some bullpoo, you’re only really going to see shifts from what you consume).

5. Drain lymph nodes and/or use facial massage at least once a week to help reduce any puffiness, swelling, congestion and fine lines and wrinkles — when the lymph nodes are backed up we experience more puffiness in the face, especially the eyes, dark circles under the eyes and fluid retention in our cheeks and under the chin. Routinely flushing these out will help majorly reduce puffiness as well as fluid retention. It is important when doing this to start and the center of the face and make slow light strokes towards the ear. You’ll do 3-5 strokes from the center of the face to the ear. Once you rolled outwards from the chin to ear, cheek to ear, and forehead to ear you will then take your tool and lightly drag it down from your ear down the side of your jaw, neck and along the collar bone outward towards your shoulder. Bonus points if you press along the collar bone with your fingertips before starting this to help with the flushing process! This process also helps improve circulation which improves collagen production and supports clearer skin and a healthier glow.

How you take care of yourself makes a major impact in your skin! True holistic skincare is not about that quick fix that we are constantly getting sold. Your skin is your largest organ and how you treat your body will constantly, eventually be reflected through that. Consistency is key when it comes to flawless skin. It’s similar how to when you become an adult you need to consistently workout and be aware of what you put in your body to maintain the figure you desire. There is never a quick bandaid solution, I promise you it will bite you in the ass in the long-run. I don’t say this out of spite, just as someone who has been there and majorly paid the consequences.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed these little quick tips to help you get one step closer to your skincare goals!
